Head coach Gautam Gambhir lauded the young Indian T20 team for their fearless approach to batting. He said that since most of the youngsters believe in that approach, the team is going to try and repeat the same thing going forward.
"I think the ideology of this T20 team is based on selflessness and fearlessness. In the last six months, these guys have done it day in, day out. We want to try and get to 250-260 regularly. In trying to do that, there'll be games where we'll get bundled out for 120-130,” Gambhir said in the post-match press conference in Mumbai on February 2 (Sunday).
The Indian coach was speaking after the team’s resounding 150-run win in the fifth and final T20I of the five-match series.
Praising the youngsters, most of whom did an amazing job in this series with Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakravarthy leading the charge, Gambhir remarked, “These are an incredible bunch of players. They enjoy themselves, they want to play for their country, they love playing for their country, and they know what it means to represent 140 crore Indians.”
He was especially appreciative of Sharma who smashed a brilliant 135 off just 54 balls to take India to 247 in the final T20I at the Wankhede Stadium.
“We want to keep backing players like Abhishek Sharma. We have to be patient with these boys. Most of these boys believe in the ideology of playing fearless cricket. I haven't seen a better T20 hundred (Abhishek's ton) against bowlers who are bowling at 140-150 kph consistently,” he added.
On the back of the 4-1 series win against England, India have now won 13 of the 15 T20Is they've played since Gambhir took over as head coach.
