Motie, McCoy named in West Indies' white-ball squad against Bangladesh

Rovman Powell meanwhile was named the vice-captain of West Indies' T20I side

Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie was called up Tuesday (June 28) by the West Indies for next month's One-Day Internationals (ODI) against Bangladesh, while fast bowler Obed McCoy returns to the T20I squad after injury.

The 27-year-old Motie made his Test debut earlier this month against Bangladesh in Antigua. He went wicketless and was dropped for the second match in St Lucia as the West Indies swept the series.

Rovman Powell has been elevated to T20I vice-captaincy. Powell along with Romario Shepherd missed the ODI series against the Netherlands due to visa delays. While Shepherd makes the cut in T20Is, Powell will be a part of both teams.

"We know Rovman's history. He has captained the West Indies before and is also the captain of his CPL franchise," chief selector Desmond Haynes said.

"Our role is to look at future leaders as well and we have identified a few, including him, who we will be putting through programmes to ensure we keep them involved in that aspect of cricket.

There were also recalls for experienced wicketkeeper Devon Thomas and all-rounder Keemo Paul, with the latter included in both squads. West Indies host Bangladesh in three T20s on July 2, 3 and 7. The first two games are in Dominica and the series finale takes place in Guyana.

"Thomas is a very versatile cricketer, who has been knocking on the door in all formats. He has been doing well in franchise cricket and with that level of talent, we must ensure we keep him interested. He brings a lot to the table and is basically a four-dimensional player, he can bat, bowl, he is brilliant in the field, and he can keep wicket as well.

"McCoy has done exceptionally well in the IPL and enjoyed a successful stint in England as well, so we are confident that he is back to his best in terms of playing and fitness," Haynes added.

"Generally, we have to start looking at the bigger picture of getting these players playing together as often as possible in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup later in the year. We need to ensure we are fielding a very strong side for that tournament," Haynes added.

The teams will stay in Guyana for a three-match ODI series, with matches scheduled for July 10, 13 and 16.
