The former Bangladesh batter, Nafees Iqbal suffered a brain hemorrhage in Chattogram on Friday. The 39-year-old was consequently airlifted to Dhaka from Chattogram for better treatment, where he is under observation in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).
Nafees, the elder brother of Tamim Iqbal and the nephew of the former cricketer and the current Bangladesh Cricket Board director, Akram Khan, played 11 Tests and 16 ODIs for Bangladesh between 2004 and 2006. Most recently, he was working as Bangladesh’s logistical manager in the 2024 T20 World Cup where he complained of headaches in the last few days. He later returned to Bangladesh with the rest of the team last week.
Nafees has also been working as the Bangladesh team manager for the last two years.
BCB director Jalal Yunus, chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury and various players like Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mashrafe Mortaza visited Nafees in the hospital.
BCB's chief physician Debashis Chowdhury informed reporters outside the hospital that Nafees is out of danger. It will take him a few weeks to recover fully.
"Specialists have informed us that Nafees is suffering from something called cerebral venous thrombosis," Chowdhury said. "He has blood clots in that part of his brain. He is now stable. His parameters are good. He will be here for a few more days. They have said that if it doesn't get worse, he will make a full recovery. He has to be observed closely on the first day. He might be shifted to a ward soon, but these things take a few weeks."
