Controversy erupted once again in the Asia Cup 2025 final, when India refused to take the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, the ACC chief and Pakistan's interior minister. Naqvi then took the trophy with him and refused to hand it over to India, who defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final.
Commenting on such a behaviour, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh tore into Naqvi, saying that he is not big enough to determine whether India should get the trophy or not.
“A lot happened during the Asia Cup. About the handshake saga — before that, the bigger question was whether the matches should have happened at all," Harbhajan said, according to News18.
“India won the tournament, and that is their biggest trophy. I don’t think Naqvi or anyone else is big enough to decide whether the trophy should be awarded or not. If not today, then tomorrow the trophy will be given, so what’s the point of keeping it aside? We have won it, and the trophy will come to us one day or another."
India defeated Pakistan thrice in the Asia Cup to clinch the title. The two teams did not shake hands before or after the match as the relationship as the neighbours have soared following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor that followed.
