India’s biggest tormentor from Headingley, Ben Duckett, got out for a five-ball duck in the second Test against England on July 3 (Thursday) in Birmingham. Duckett might have thought that India’s bowling attack, sans Jasprit Bumrah, was quite an easy proposition, but it turned out terribly wrong.
It was Akash Deep who, in his first Test in England, dismissed Duckett in the third over of the innings. The 28-year-old bowled a delivery that moved just away from the left-hander at the last minute, taking the edge as the ball travelled straight into the hands of Indian skipper Shubman Gill.
The LSG pacer didn’t stop there, continuing his momentum, removing Ollie Pope off the very next ball, as England were reduced to 13/2 in the third over of the innings. At that point, Akash Deep averaged 18.4 against top-order (1-3) batters, only behind Sajid Khan’s 13.8 since the former’s debut.
Later on, Mohammed Siraj picked up Zak Crawley’s wicket, as England, in pursuit of 588, were reduced to 25/3 after just eight overs. Earlier in the clash, India tormented the hosts, smashing 587 runs in the clash, with Gill scoring 269, breaking multiple records.
