“Never Talk About Another Player’s Contract” – Former CSK Batter Slams Ashwin

Ashwin, on his show, had suggested that the franchise paid “extra cash” to secure Brevis’ services

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Anirudha Srikkanth has hit out at veteran spinner R Ashwin for publicly commenting on Dewald Brevis’ Indian Premier League (IPL) contract on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin, on his show, had suggested that the franchise paid “extra cash” to secure Brevis’ services - something other teams weren’t willing to do. While he appeared to be referring to CSK paying above Brevis’ original auction price to bring him in as an injury replacement, the remark quickly snowballed, with critics using it to question the franchise’s methods.

In response, CSK issued a clarification, stressing that Brevis was signed as an injury replacement for INR 2.2 crore, and the process was in “complete compliance with the rules and regulations of the IPL.” Ashwin himself later clarified that at no stage did he suggest CSK had done anything wrong or illegal.

Still, Anirudha Srikkanth was unimpressed and didn’t hold back. “This has come right after Ashwin, on his YouTube channel, spoke about his contract. Which I feel is, first of all, very, very wrong. Being a current player, being in the same team, talking about another player's contract - even though it might have been in a different context - this is the problem it can lead to,” Anirudha said on the Cheeky Cheeka YouTube channel.

“You never talk about another person's contract, first of all. And because of that, CSK have strongly put out a statement. All the fans have been given that ease, stating: don’t worry at all, for the next two years this player is only for us.”

Brevis played six matches in IPL 2025, scoring 225 runs at an average of 37.5 and a strike rate of 180. Overall, 2025 has been a breakout year for the South African, with 995 runs in 30 T20 innings at an average of 43.26 and a blistering strike rate of 186.3.
