An unprecedented Test milestone was achieved by New Zealand on day two of their second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo as we witnessed the first instance in Test history of three Top 5 batters crossing the 150-run mark in the same innings.
Batting second, opener Devon Conway (153) crossed the 150-run mark first, and then a few hours later, he was followed by No.5 batter Rachin Ravindra, who got to 150 off just 133 balls.
Just an over later, No.4 batter Henry Nicholls joined Conway and Ravindra as the three, together, scripted Test history. The trio’s efforts meant that the Kiwis ended day three on 601/3, potentially setting themselves up to become the first team in Test history to score 1000 runs in an innings, with plenty of time still left in the contest.
In fact, this is only the third instance of a Test match witnessing three 150+ scores in the same innings.
Instances of three 150+ scores in the same Test innings
England vs AUS at The Oval in 1938
India vs SL in Kanpur, 1986
New Zealand vs ZIM in Bulawayo, 2025
715/6 (dec) is New Zealand’s highest ever Test score, which came against Bangladesh in Hamilton in 2019. They looked primed to go past that total in the first session on day three and create a personal record.
