NEWSAustralia's three-match T20 International (T20I) series against hosts New Zealand scheduled to be played between March 17 and 20 in Napier has been cancelled, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has confirmed
The series had been arranged on the basis of New Zealand government's plan to relax the trans-Tasman border. However, the plans have now been delayed and there are no available MIQ accommodations available for the Australian side when they arrive in New Zealand.
The only T20I between the Blackcaps and the Netherlands has also been moved to Napier as opposed to it being played at the Bay Oval.
NZC chief executive David White expressed disappointment over the series being scrapped. “At the time we scheduled the visit there was a lot of hope that the trans-Tasman border would be open for those who met the right criteria," White said
“However, the advent of Omicron has, unfortunately, changed everything at the border, and has made it impossible for us to continue with the series.
“It’s disappointing - but we know it’s the same for businesses and individuals and other sports, and we’re grateful for the international schedule we have.”
The good news however remains with the fact that the other international fixtures will go ahead as planned.
India Women are already in the country ready to play six white-ball fixtures, while the South Africa men's team is currently in MIQ in Christchurch and preparing for the first Test, which will begin at the Hagley Oval on February 17, with the Dutch side visiting next month.
