Rehan Ahmed might have debuted as a leg-spinner for England in Test cricket back in 2022, but the 20-year-old is transforming into a lethal batter in Steve Smith-esque fashion, dominating the ongoing County Championship season playing in the top-order.
On July 22 (Tuesday), the right-hander scored 115 for Leicestershire batting at No.3 against Derbyshire, posting his fifth century in first-class cricket.
Remarkably, it was his fourth ton of the season, with him now having amassed 615 runs in the current Championship at an average of 47.30 and strike rate of 74.09. Northamptonshire’ Saif Zaib is the only batter to have scored more tons in Division 2 this season than Rehan.
Most centuries in 2025 County Championship Division 2
5 - Saif Zaib (NOR)
4 - Rehan Ahmed (LEI)
4 - Ben Compton (KEN)
The century on Tuesday was Rehan’s third successive ton this season, with him also scoring centuries against Glamorgan and Lancashire.
Rehan has also taken 7 wickets @ 22.71 with the ball but he’s not bowled much, sending down only 62.1 overs across 10 innings. It seems evident that he’s slowly but surely transitioning into a batting all-rounder.
The youngster debuted in 2022 away in Pakistan. He took a 5-fer on debut, becoming the youngest English bowler to clinch a 5-fer in Tests. He showed promise with the bat occasionally, but did not post big scores, with his highest score being 28 against India in Hyderabad.
