Lungi Ngidi of South Africa joined a unique list of bowlers after picking up his second five-wicket haul in ODIs against Australia on August 22 (Friday). The event took place during the second ODI of the three-match series between the hosts Australia and South Africa at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, Queensland.
Thanks to Ngidi’s 5/42 in 8.4 overs, South Africa were able to bowl out Australia for 193, defending their total of 277 with much ease, and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series with this 84-run win.
Ngidi, who picked up the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Aaron Hardie, Xavier Bartlett and Adam Zampa, completed his second five-wicket haul against Australia.
His first five-wicket haul against the Aussie unit came in 2020 at Bloemfontein in South Africa in March 2020. At that time, the right-arm pacer had picked 6/58 in a winning cause.
Not only did the 29-year-old become the first South African to register multiple five-wicket hauls against Australia in ODIs, but he also joined an elusive list of bowlers who have taken multiple ODI five-wicket hauls against the mighty Aussies.
While West Indies’ Curtly Ambrose and New Zealand’s Shane Bond have done it thrice, another Kiwi, Trent Boult, is the only other bowler apart from Ngidi to have picked two five-wicket hauls against the Aussies.
