Hockley to step down as Cricket Australia chief executive in March 2025

He took charge in 2020 in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and has since navigated CA through many crises

On August 6 (Tuesday), Nick Hockley announced that he would be stepping down as Cricket Australia (CA) executive in March 2025 after being in charge for five years. Hockley took charge in 2020, replacing Kevin Roberts at the helm after the latter's inability to navigate the COVID-19 crisis following staff members' protests.

He took over in an interim capacity but took charge on a full-time basis only in May 2021, which included successfully hosting India for a four-match Test series amid border closures.

"This was a difficult decision however following what promises to be a blockbuster summer and with our five-year strategic plan well progressed, this is the right time to pursue another challenge, while giving the Board plenty of time to find its next CEO to build on the strong foundations now in place," Hockley said.

"This is not the time for goodbyes, as I remain completely focussed on the season ahead and supporting the Board on succession and a smooth transition."

Incidentally, Hockley's final season in charge of CA will see India visit Australia once again for a five-match Test series and also the Women's Ashes in January.

Hockley's tenure was largely a successful one but had a few bitter moments, which included the controversial exit of Tim Paine as captain just a day ahead of the 2021-22 Ashes and a tense end of Justin Langer's tenure as head coach. He made an effort to quash David Warner's lifetime leadership ban, but the batter later withdrew the appeal following the independent panel's insistence to revisit what transpired at the Newlands in 2018.

However, since Pat Cummins was appointed captain of the side, Australia have gone on to win the Ashes at home, retain it in England, win the World Test Championship (WTC) and also win the ODI World Cup. The Women's team, too, have won multiple World Cups and also secured the Commonwealth Games gold at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

"As CEO, Nick navigated the sport through a period of unprecedented challenge during the pandemic and has delivered significant growth and stability," CA chair Mike Baird said.

"Under Nick's leadership, several major deals are now in place - many for the next seven years - and the game is set up for continued success. As Nick says, his full focus is on delivering another successful summer for our fans, players, broadcasters, partners and the whole of Australian Cricket and there will be time to celebrate his legacy and achievements when he steps down from the role next year."

Prior to his role with CA, Hockley served as chief executive of the T20 Women's World Cup committee staged in Australia that saw record-breaking numbers. He also worked on the London Olympics and the 2015 World Cup.

Todd Greenberg, the current CEO of the Australia Cricketers' Association, is tipped to take over from Hockley, subject to his interest.
