England are in deep trouble at the moment, with wins being scarce and a lot of criticism coming their way due to their style of play. Jos Buttler has already given up the captaincy and some big changes seem to be imminent in the team.
Amidst this, R Ashwin also didn’t leave a chance to show England a mirror as their strategies unraveled in the tournament.
“I saw Jos Buttler’s post-match interview (after the Afghanistan game). He was very candid in saying, ‘I do not know what my leadership aspirations are in the future.’ They had a terrible 50-over World Cup in 2023,” Ashwin said on his Hindi YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’.
Ashwin lambasted the lack of any set template in England’s batting as too much aggression has caused England a lot of losses in the recent past in the format. He also felt that Harry Brook’s career, who is thought to be England’s batting future, is also on a downward trend.
“There was a statement from Ben Duckett after losing the first ODI in India. He said, ‘We don’t care if we lose 3-0 to India. Because we want to beat India in the final of the Champions Trophy,” Ashwin remarked.
“There is no consistent template in your batting. You were marketing and branding Harry Brook as the next generation’s sensation. But Harry Brook’s game is also sinking. He is now under immense pressure to produce match-winning knocks.”
