For the first time in the history of the T20 World Cup, Pakistan have been knocked out in the group stage of the competition. Despite the reappointment of Babar Azam as captain and the appointment of Gary Kirsten as head coach, Pakistan finished third in their group, behind India and the first-timers, the United States of America.
Pakistan finished the group stage with just two wins against Ireland and Canada after losing against both the USA and India in their first two fixtures of the campaign. In the aftermath of the embarrassing loss, reports have emerged that Kirsten is unhappy with the dressing room, stating there is no ‘unity’ within the team.
“There’s no unity in Pakistan’s team, They call it a team, but it isn’t a team. They aren’t supporting each other; everyone is separated, left and right. I’ve worked with many teams, but I’ve never seen such a situation,” Kirsten was quoted as saying by Pakistani journalist Ihtisham Ul Haq on ‘X’.
Even in their clash against Ireland, Pakistan found themselves in a spot of bother at 62/6 before a 33-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Abbas Afridi and Babar Azam led them closer to a win. Eventually, it was Shaheen Shah’s twin sixes that sealed their win over Ireland in a close encounter.
