England captain Jos Buttler said that the way his team played in the first ODI of the three-match series against India is not how they want to play going forward. The Lancashire man was visibly upset with the team’s inability to prolong the period of pressure on the opposition.
"This is not how we want to play. We want to put the opposition under pressure and keep the momentum going as long as possible. We need to play better for longer, we need to execute our plans better,” he said in the post-match presentation on February 6 (Thursday) in Nagpur.
“That has been the same through the T20s, as well as today. Obviously disappointed not to win,” added the 34-year-old.
Pointing out where they let the game slide off, Buttler said, “We got off to a fantastic start on the two guys [Salt and Ben Duckett] were very aggressive on the power play. Losing four wickets so close together put us back.”
“When you see the way the wicket played, another 40 or 50 runs could have been crucial,” he added.
England, after getting off to a flyer, where Duckett and Salt put up 75 in just 8.4 overs, lost the next four wickets for just 36 runs, which eventually had them in trouble as they ended up scoring a mediocre 248 in 47.4 overs. India chased down the target with nearly 12 overs to spare.
