Not thinking about contract situation, focussed on the series: Perera

The first ODI of the three-match series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be played in Mirpur on May 23

Newly-appointed Sri Lanka captain Kusal Perera insists that his players are focussed on the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Bangladesh and not worried about the contract situation at the moment. The Sri Lankan cricketers are yet to sign the contract put in front of them by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Senior players like Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal have refused to sign the contract, based on the board's new grading system and are not part of the squad against Bangladesh.

"We don't want to think too much about the ongoing contract issue with the board since we're focused on the series at this moment. Yes, it is a concern for all of us but we're hoping it will be resolved soon,'' Perera told reporters on Saturday (May 22).

Perera also added that he will urge his new-look team to learn from their mistakes.  "Sometimes you need to get hit and learn from your mistakes,'' Perera said.

"We have plans for our death bowling, but it's important to keep in mind that that's a role that you only get better at with experience. We can't expect perfection from the start, our bowlers are new to this role so we need to have patience.

"We know that one of Bangladesh's strengths is their spin bowling attack, so we expect wickets to cater to that. I think our fielding has the potential to make a huge impact on this series,'' he concluded.

The first ODI - a day-night affair - will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. This series will be part of the 2023 World Cup Super League.
