Open to playing in the Champions Trophy if selected: David Warner

The Australia opener retired from ODI cricket after last year's ODI World Cup but has left the door open for a return

Australia opener David Warner, who recently played his last international match in the T20 World Cup 2024, has confirmed that he is open to playing in the Champions Trophy for Australia next year if called up. Warner retired from Tests in January and played his last 50-over game for his country in the One-Day International (ODI) World Cup in India in 2023, but even then, he had left the door open for a Champions Trophy return.

"I will continue to play franchise cricket for a while, and I am also open to playing for [Australia] in the Champions Trophy if selected," he posted on Social Media.

Warner's selection in the Champions Trophy will perhaps be subject to him playing in the ODIs ahead of the eight-team event. The Pat Cummins-led side will tour England in September and will take on Pakistan in November. In fact, Warner had publically endorsed Jake Fraser-McGurk as his successor recently. "All yours now, champion," Warner wrote on Instagram Stories, referring to Fraser-McGurk.

Skipper Cummins, too, had spoken of Warner's return to the Champions Trophy in January, saying that his selection would be a "break glass in an emergency option."

Warner is Australia's sixth-highest run-getter in ODIs, accumulating 6,932 runs at 45.30, including 22 tons and 33 fifties.

"Chapter closed!! It's been an unbelievable experience to play at the highest level for such a long period," Warner began his Instagram post. "Australia was my team. The majority of my career was at the international level. It's been an honour to be able to do this. 100+ games in all formats is my highlight," Warner wrote on Social Media.

"I want to say thanks to everyone out there who has made this possible. My wife and my girls, who sacrificed so much, thank you for all your support. No person will ever know what we've been through. For all the cricket fans out there, I truly hope I have entertained you and changed cricket, especially tests, in a way where we scored a bit faster than others. We cannot do what we love without the fans, so thanks."

Warner will now be seen in plenty of T20 leagues in the near future, including playing in the Canada Global T20 League, a T10 tournament in the Cayman Islands and potentially a potential return to Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL), among other leagues.
