Yashasvi Jaiswal added to his list of memorable tons as he smashed a brilliant century on Day 3 of the Oval Test, which is also the fifth and deciding match of the five-game series between hosts England and India. After slamming the hundred on August 2 (Saturday), the southpaw showed confidence in his bowlers to clinch the game and level the series to retain the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Reasoning why India are favourites to win the game, Jaiswal said, “It was a spicy wicket. There is movement off the wicket; it will not be easy. We are quite confident we will win.”
Talking about his century and the presence of former India Test captain and current ODI captain Rohit Sharma in the stands while he scored the ton, Jaiswal said, “I was enjoying batting here. I knew what shots to play on this surface. Mentally, I was ready to keep pushing in our last innings here.”
“I saw him [Rohit], and he gave me a message to keep playing. There are different challenges of playing Tests in different countries, but I learnt a lot from my seniors, like Rohit bhai, Virat bhai. Now KL bhai, Gill. It’s amazing to discuss with them and learn from their experiences,” added the 23-year-old.
Thanks to Jaiswal's ton and fifties from Akash Deep, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, India managed to put on 396 in their second innings, setting up a tough, but not impossible, run chase for England, who needed 374 to secure the series.
At the end of Day 3, though, India would consider themselves ahead in the game with England at 50/1, needing 324 on a moving wicket on Day 4 with nine wickets in hand.
