Rohit Sharma is no longer an active Test and T20 International (T20I) cricketer for India. He plays only One-Day Internationals (ODI), a format which, as of today, he continues to lead. Rohit recently led India to the Champions Trophy title in March, and before that, he also captained India to a T20 World Cup title in the Caribbean last year.
However, according to the latest report on Dainik Jagran, Rohit's stint as India captain could be numbered as a new candidate has emerged, and no, it's not Shubman Gill as everyone speculated, it is, in fact, Shreyas Iyer, who was not considered for selection for the Asia Cup 2025, starting next month.
It is believed that the BCCI is considering appointing Iyer as the next captain of the ODI team, and he could start his tenure as early as the Australia series, starting in October. That could mean curtains to Rohit's career, not just as captain, but also as a player, if that were to materialise. However, the BCCI is expected to hold talks with Rohit about his future after the Asia Cup.
Gill is currently India's Test captain and is expected to take over as T20I captain as well, post the 2026 T20 World Cup. The selectors are considering appointing a different ODI captain to manage Gill's workload.
Iyer has proved his credentials with the bat lately in ODIs, a format in which he has scored 2,845 runs at 48.22 to go with a strike rate of exactly 100.
He was one of the three Indian players to score over 500 runs in the ODI World Cup at home in 2023, and in the Champions Trophy, he was India's highest run-getter with 243 runs in five innings.
He has proved his captaincy credentials in the Indian Premier League (IPL), having led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the title in 2024 and in 2025, he led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final.
