Pant to captain Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021

Regular skipper Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out due to an injury

Delhi Capitals have announced Rishabh Pant as their captain for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This decision comes after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of this year's IPL due to a shoulder injury he suffered during the recent One-Day International series between India and England.

Since joining the Delhi-based franchise in 2016, Pant has featured in 68 IPL matches and scored 2079 runs at an average of 35.23 and a strike rate of 151.97.

In a press release by the Capitals, Pant said: "Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I've always harboured. And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. I am truly grateful, especially to our team owners, who considered me capable enough for this role. With an amazing coaching staff, and a plethora of accomplished seniors around me, I can't wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals."

While the Capitals are coached by one of the most successful captains ever in Ricky Ponting, they also possess players like Steve Smith, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan who all have experience of captaining in the IPL before.

After having made it to the final for the first time ever in 2020, the Capitals will be hoping to go a step further this time around. They begin their IPL 2021 campaign against Chennai Super Kings on April 10.
