IPL 2025: Teams given time till October 31 to finalise retentions

Six players can be retained by each franchise, including a maximum of two uncapped players

Indian Premier League (IPL) teams have been given a deadline of up to October 31 to finalise their retentions, according to a report on ESPNCricinfo. Each  franchise can retain a maximum of of six players - Indian and/or overseas - and can use a combination of retentions and Right to Match (RTM) methods to finalise their players. A maximum of two uncapped players and maximum of five capped players can be retained, according to the regulations announced by the IPL on September 28 (Saturday).

A player who makes his international debut before October 31 will be considered as a capped player. However, if a player was to make his debut after the said date, he will go into the auction in the uncapped players category. The IPL announced that an uncapped player can be retained for a price of INR 4 crore ahead of the auction. But if the player makes his debut before October 31, he cannot be retained under this category.

Each IPL franchise will be given a purse of INR 120 crore. Heading into the auction the value of the purse will go down, depending on the franchise' retentions.  "It is at the discretion of the franchise to choose their combination for retentions and RTMs," the IPL release said.

"The six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players and a maximum of two uncapped players."

Even in the previous mega auction in 2021, the IPL had announced a INR 4 crore retention price for uncapped players. However, this time around, the IPL brought back the rule that was removed in 2021, stating that any player who last played an international match over five years back, will be deemed an uncapped player.

As a result, MS Dhoni, who last played for India in 2019, could be one of those high-profile players whom his franchise could retain as an uncapped player.
