Prithvi Shaw might be nowhere close to playing for India, but he is making the right noises. Earlier today, he smashed the sixth-fastest century in Ranji Trophy history, getting to the milestone in just 72 deliveries against Chandigarh.
A few hours later, he turned that into a big double century, smashing 222 off just 156 deliveries, which included 29 fours and five sixes. He got to his double century off just 141 deliveries, making him the third fastest to reach the landmark after Tanmay Agarwal (119 balls) in 2024 and Ravi Shastri (123 balls) in 1985.
Shaw has made amends for his failure in the first innings, in which he made just 8 off 9 balls. The 25-year-old moved to Maharashtra from Mumbai ahead of the 2025-26 season. He began his stint with his new team with a duck and 75 against Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram.
Playing his second game for the team, he has not just notched up his first century in Ranji Trophy for Maharashtra, but has also gone on to slam his maiden double century for the team.
A combination of poor performances and off-field drama has seen Shaw, who was once considered the next big thing, fall way down the pecking order as far as an international call-up is concerned. In fact, after playing seven straight seasons for Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the batter did not find any takers in the 2025 auction.
Overall, he has played five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I for India, the last of which came in 2021.
