In what was a grand gesture to honour the legacy of Rohit Sharma, one of the most successful skippers for India, the Mumbai Cricket Association unveiled a stand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 16, 2025 (Friday). The function was attended by many dignitaries, including Rohit’s parents and wife, apart from Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Reacting to the occasion, former Indian coach Rahul Dravid, in a video posted by Mumbai Indians, congratulated the recently-retired Test skipper for his success over the years and joked about getting tickets from him in the future.
“Hey Rohit. Guess you hit so many sixes into those stands that they had to name one after you! But, congratulations. I’m sure as a young boy going into the iconic Wankhede Stadium — truly one of the great stadiums in the world — I’m sure you would have loved to have played there, I’m sure you would have wanted to have some great performances there, which you have done. I’m not sure you dreamt about having a stand named after you, but that it has come to that and that you have one named after you, it’s a just reward for your contribution to both Mumbai and Indian cricket,” said Dravid in a video shared by the Mumbai Indians on their X handle.
“It’s truly well deserved — congratulations! I hope it was a great day with family and friends. Looking forward to seeing a lot more sixes into the Rohit Sharma Stand in all the games that you play. And when I’m short on tickets in Mumbai — now that you have a stand — I know who to contact,” Dravid added.
Dravid was the Head Coach of the Indian team when Rohit took over the leadership role in the Indian team in all three formats. The pair took India to dizzying heights by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and guiding the team to the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup final. It must be noted that Rohit made his ODI debut against Ireland in 2007 under Dravid’s captaincy.
