Rahul to undergo surgery for acute appendicitis

The PBKS skipper has been flown to Mumbai for surgery and further treatment

Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper KL Rahul has been diagnosed with acute appendicitis and has flown to Mumbai for surgery and further treatment, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise announced on Sunday (May 2).

Rahul is currently the leading run-scorer in the IPL 2021, having scored 331 runs at 66.20 this season. He finished as the tournament's leading run-getter last season as well with 670 runs, but PBS finished in the sixth position with just 12 points.

PTI has learnt that Mayank Agarwal will lead the side in Rahul's absence, starting with tonight's match against Delhi Capitals (DC). Mayank however did not play the previous game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and is expected to be back in the XI to replace his Karnataka teammate. For Rahul to make it back to the PBKS XI, he will not just have to recover from his surgery but will have to undergo quarantine under the SOPs issued by the BCCI.

Whether Rahul will come back to the PBKS fold this season remains unclear.

"K L Rahul complained of severe abdomen pain last night and after not responding to medication, he was taken to the emergency room for further tests which revealed that he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis," the team said in a statement."

"It will be resolved surgically and for safety measures, he has been transferred to the hospital for the same," it added.

PBKS are currently in the fifth position in IPL 2021 having won three out of their seven matches. They recently beat RCB by 34 runs in Ahmedabad, a match that saw Rahul smash an unbeaten 91 from just 57 deliveries.
