Monsoons and rain threats have taken over the ongoing 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
After forcing schedule changes and being a key decision making factor in deciding venues for the playoff games and the final, the onset of monsoon is set to disrupt the extremely crucial clash between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals on May 21 as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Mumbai for the next four days.
With three teams — Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings — having ensured their qualification in the playoffs, MI and DC are in direct competition with each other for the fourth and last spot in the top four.
Both teams have two games left, with MI on 14 points and DC on 13. If tomorrow's game is rained out, both teams will share a point each, and the qualification will then be decided by the last games. Coincidentally, both teams will face PBKS in their last league game of the season.
Rains in the city have already disrupted the practice session of the two sides, and heavy downpour was reported on the evening before the game.
This is the last game scheduled at the Wankhede stadium, and although the drainage system absorbs well there, the sandy base of the outfield takes a lot longer to dry. T20 Mumbai league, Mumbai Cricket Association’s T20 League, is also scheduled to begin from June 4 in the stadium.
