The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is undergoing some top leadership changes as the current President, Roger Binny, had to vacate his post after he turned 70 on July 19. As per the BCCI’s constitution, a person becomes ineligible to hold office after they turn 70.
According to reports in Dainik Jagran, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, who is 65, has been called in and made Interim President until the next AGM convenes and selects the new President as per the due process.
Binny had to always vacate the post after turning 70; however, the new National Sports Bill passed in the Parliament raises the age limit for office-bearers of sports federations in the country to 75, if the global governing body of that sport doesn’t impose any restrictions. It gave hope that Binny might be able to stay longer; however, the BCCI constitution remains unchanged as of now, and Binny had to comply with the rules.
Meanwhile, the BCCI is planning to have the next AGM in September, where the new President will be chosen. It remains to be seen whether the BCCI legal team is able to propose some changes to the constitution until then.
