Ranji Round-up: Three double hundreds and a six-for for Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna ran through J&K's batting order in the best bowling display of the day in the Ranji circuit

Big day for Mumbai tomorrow

Bowled out for a paltry 163 on Day 1, Mumbai threatened to return the favor to Goa by restricting them to 180 for 6 in the morning session. However, Eknath Kerkar’s 71 and crucial lower-order contributions - 24 by Shrikant Wagh and 59 by Lakshay Garg - stretched Goa’stotalto 327.

For Mumbai, Shams Mulani picked 6/107 while Dhawal Kulkarni chipped in with two wickets.

Despite a deficit of 164, the skipper Prithvi Shaw took the team to a breezy start with his 47-ball 44. But he fell in the penultimate over of the day to lift Goa’s spirits again. Mumbai finished the day 57/1, still 107 runs behind. Another 300 runs tomorrow could help them to build pressure on Goa in the final innings of the match. With Ajinkya Rahane and an in-form Sarfaraz Khan in their ranks, they stand every chance to make a comeback in this game.

Double tons for Satish, Jani and Mundhe

Ganesh Satish began the day at 145 not out. He used the overnight break to full advantage and continued from he left last night, scoring 275. He added 288 runs for the fourth wicket with Akshay Wadkar who himself remained unbeaten at 145. Consequently, Vidarbha declared at 569/5. In response, Maharashtra ended the day at 46/1, losing Yash Nahar in the last over of the day.

In Ahmedabad, Chirag Jani’s 235 (125* overnight) carried Saurashtra to 501. A wicket each for Jaydev Unadkat and Chetan Sakariya reduced Odisha to 52/3 at stumps. Nagaland’s Shrikanth Mundhe started the day at 70 not out and notched up 207. As a result, Nagaland’s lead over Arunachal Pradesh stretched to 197 by the end of the day’s play. These three remain to be the biggest run scorers on Day 2.

6-for for Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna was too hot for Jammu & Kashmir. All his six wickets were scattered between J&K’s top seven and a space of 28 balls, bundling them out for a paltry 93.

Earlier in the day, Karun Nair extended his individual score - his first first-class ton since 2017 - to 175, ushering Karnataka to 302. By stumps, they extended their lead to 337. Devdutt Padikkal and Ravikumar Samarth added 62 runs for the first wicket in the second innings. Padikkal fell a run short of his fifty.

Rana to Haryana’s rescue

Skipper Himanshu Rana led from the front with his fourth first-class century as Haryana reached 204/3 in a strong reply to Punjab's mammoth 444 on Day 2. Haryana had a jittery start and were 4/2 after losing both the openers within the second over before Rana rebuilt their innings.

Earlier, resuming the day at 368/5 Punjab lost their remaining five wickets for 76 runs in 23 overs as Haryana staged a spirited fightback riding on rookie off-spinner Aman Kumar's fine 4/88. Punjab senior batter Mandeep Singh was stranded on 159 as wickets kept falling around him, eventually folding in 111 overs.

Hyderabad stay in the hunt against Bengal

Skipper Ravi Teja and the lower-order batter Tanay Thyagarajan struck resolute fifties, leading Hyderabad’s recovery from 70/7 to a total of 205. The duo also picked 8 wickets between in Bengal’s first innings total of 242.

For Bengal, the new ball bowler picked a four-for while five other bowlers had one scalp each in bundling out Hyderabad. At close on day two, Bengal had built on the lead slightly for an overall lead of 53 with nine wickets intact. It is certainly turning out to be one of the closes battles of Round 2 of this Ranji Trophy.

Group E

Ricky Bhui's 149 and Karan Shinde's 96-run knock helped Andhra post 389 in the first innings against Services in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group E match. The 218-run fourth wicket partnership between Bhui and Shinde was the cornerstone of the Andhra innings as the rest of the batters did not make substantial contributions. From 350 for 4, Andhra slipped to 389 all out with Narang finishing with 6 for 56.

Services lost the wickets of Anshul Guta (14) and Rahul Singh (9) to C V Stephen and K V Shashikanth and finished the day at 75 for 2, 314 runs in arrears.

In the other match of the group, Swapnil Singh's 97 and Kunal Chandela (89) helped Uttarakhand post 337 in the first innings.

Left-arm spinner Mayank Mishra got into the act and picked up four wickets to put Rajasthan in trouble at 117 for 5 at the close of play. His victims included Manender Singh (52), skipper Ashok Menaria (5), Aditya Garhwal (3) and Yash Kothari (26).

Unlucky Gani

After creating history last week, becoming the first cricketer to score a triple ton on first-class debut, Bihar’s Sakibul Gani had a great chance to pile up another hundred. He finished Day 1 unbeaten on 98. Unfortunately, he couldn’t add to his overnight score and fell 2 runs short of the feat. Bihar still did well to declare at 431/9. In response, Sikkim lost three early wickets but recovered from 12/3 to 138/3 at stumps.

Fifty for Shahrukh

After a mammoth 194 in the previous match, Shahrukh Khan built on his great form with a well-paced 69 off 105 balls. Tamil Nadu, bolstered by the hundred from the brothers - Baba Aparajith (166) and Baba Indrajith (127), Shahrukh’s fifty took them to 470/9d.

Chhattisgarh is dwindling in their response at 105/5 at stumps. The left-arm spin duo of Manimaran Siddharth and R Sai Kishore have two wickets each.

Delhi aim for first innings lead

A poor batting day for Delhi has pushed them behind in their match against Jharkhand. Starting the day at 28/1, they were 223/8 at stumps, still 28 behind their opponent’s first innings score. 146/7 at one point, Jonty Sidhu (78 not out) added 77 for the eighth wicket with Vikas Mishra (21 from 117 balls). Shahbaz Nadeem picked 3/58.

Sidhu will have Navdeep Saini and Ishant Sharma for support on Day 3 with the task of assuring Delhi at least go past Jharkhand’s first innings score.
