Team India Test skipper Rohit Sharma’s bad form in red-ball cricket continues as the right-hander struggled immeasurably on his Ranji Trophy return, departing for 3 off 19 balls in Mumbai’s clash against Jammu and Kashmir.
Rohit’s return to the Ranji Trophy after a decade had made all the headlines ahead of the ongoing round, and he got into action right away as Mumbai opted to bat first at the BKC on January 23 (Thursday).
However, after finding it hard to get the J&K bowlers away across the first five overs of the clash, Rohit departed after a leading edge off Umar Nazir carried straight to the fielder at mid-off. The dismissal was eerily similar to the way he got out in the first innings of the fourth Test against Australia at the MCG, miscuing a half-hearted pull that ballooned the ball straight to Scott Boland at mid-on.
That makes it 10 consecutive failures in red-ball cricket for Rohit. He has not crossed 20 in 10 innings now and his last 10 red-ball scores read 3, 9, 3, 10, 6, 3, 11, 18, 8, 0.
There is a major question mark over the Test future of the 37-year-old, who ‘opted out’ of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney due to his own poor form with the bat.
