RCB Star Becomes Youngest In History To Captain England

Swashbuckling English left-hander Jacob Bethell has been given the opportunity to skipper England in a T20I series against Ireland. Bethell, who’s just 21, will become the youngest ever cricketer to captain England when he dons the skipper’s hat against Ireland in the three T20 series beginning on September 17. 

He broke a record that stayed for more than 136 years, and was held by South Africa’s Monty Bowden, who was 23 years and 144 days when he skippered England in 1888-89. 

Right before that series, England are scheduled to play South Africa in a T20 and ODI series where Harry Brook will captain England. He’ll rest for the Ireland series, where Bethell will take over the reins. 

The South Africa series will see Joe Root featuring in the ODIs; meanwhile, the likes of left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, left-arm pacer Luke Wood and right-handed opener Phil Salt will only play the T20Is. 

The ODI series will also feature right-arm pacer Sonny Baker, who has been given a maiden England call-up. He had a very good tour with the England Lions, which made the selectors pick him for the squad. 

Rehan Ahmed has been rewarded with selection in all three squads (South Africa T20Is and ODIs, Ireland T20Is) after a splendid domestic season for Leicestershire. 

Meanwhile, Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, and Jamie Smith will sit out the Ireland games just like Brook, where Marcus Trescothick will take over as the coach from Brendon McCullum.
