Jacob Bethell’s disastrous last few months continued, as the all-rounder conceded 61 runs in just five overs against South Africa at Lord’s on September 4 (Thursday). After a horrible outing in the first ODI, there was a lot of hope on Bethell’s shoulders to live up to the tag of being a ‘generational talent’.
Unfortunately for Bethell, there was no respect for him, as Matthew Breetzke attacked him with a boundary in the first over. Breetzke continued his onslaught, smashing a four and a six in the 14-run over, making the left-arm spinner’s life difficult.
CSK’s young star Dewald Brevis then destroyed the left-arm spinner further, conceding 17 runs in his third over. While he did end up dismissing Brevis, the right-hander had already done enough damage, with two fours and two sixes.
The left-arm spinner ended his spell with figures of 1/61 off his five overs, with an economy rate of 12.20. It was the fourth-worst economy rate for a spinner in ODIs, and the worst economy rate for a bowler at Lord’s.
