Records that can be broken in IPL 2024

Plenty of records have already been breached and there are a few more that could be achieved by the end of this edition

*All stats till IPL 2024, Match 32

Till now, we have already seen numerous records broken at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) posted the highest total in IPL history not once but TWICE. The first time, they breached Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) 262  against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Hyderabad, when they scored 277/3 and then four matches later smashed 287/3 against RCB in Bengaluru.

RCB got a consolation of sorts when they scored 262/7, chasing 288, to set a record for the highest team total batting second. The match also saw the most boundaries (4s & 6s) hit in an IPL fixture — 81.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) registered the joint-highest successful run-chase in the IPL when they chased down 224 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens. With so many records having already been breached this season, we look at potential records that could be broken.

Most centuries in a season

Six centuries have been scored this season already, which accounts for one ton every 5.33 innings. Twelve centuries were scored in 2023 —the most in a season — going past eight scored in 2022. Hence, it would not be wrong to presume that we will see more that 12 tons this season.

Most sixes in a season

In 2023, as many as 1,124 sixes were hit, the most in a single edition of IPL. As many as 15.19 sixes were scored per match. While 553 sixes have been hit in IPL 2024 so far — 48 more than the entire 2009 season — an average of 17.28 sixes have been hit every match.

Surely, we are on the road to breaking the record set in 2023 unless the pitches drastically slow down in the second half. As far as individual performances are concerned, Chris Gayle currently holds the record for the most sixes hit in a season (59) in 14 innings back in 2012.

Heinrich Klaasen has hit the most sixes this season – 24 in six innings. As things stand, the South African has a great chance of surpassing Gayle.

Most 200-plus totals

As many as 37 totals over 200 were scored in 2023, which is a record – pipping the 18 times double century was breached in 2022. Will we see a new record set in 2024? In the 32 matches so far, a total of 200 or more has been hit on 14 occasions, which is already more than 13 previous IPL seasons.

The batters are scoring runs with ease; centuries are being hit more frequently than ever. Hence, we could see 200 breached many, many times this season.

No quiet overs?

Only four maidens have been bowled in the 32 matches in the IPL 2024. In 2013, 36 maidens were bowled, the most across seasons. Incidentally, that season, the scoring rate was 7.52 an over—the second lowest.

In the ongoing season, the run rate is 9.27 – the highest across all the seasons. Clearly, there is a correlation between the scoring rate and the maidens bowled.

We are on course to witness the highest run rate in an IPL season, and at the same time, we could very well see the least maidens bowled. the current record for the least maidens bowled is 13 - in 2010 and 2017.

Bowlers’ nightmare

Bowlers have gone for 9.27 an over, which is the most expensive season in the IPL. Moreover, we could also have the most expensive campaign for a bowler across all IPL seasons as well.

As things stand, Anrich Nortje is the most expensive bowler in a campaign ACROSS SEASONS in the IPL with an economy rate of 13.4 (Min: 15 overs). Surprisingly, the second on the list is Jasprit Bumrah, who, in 2015, went for 12.3 runs in an over.

Batters’ delight

Dinesh Karthik is on course to become the batter with the highest strike rate in an IPL season (minimum 100 deliveries).

He is currently striking it at 205.4, slightly more than what Andre Russell did in 2019.
