STAT NUGGETSThe debutants set it up for India to have a perfect start in the ODIs after losing the first match in both Tests and T20Is. With a win in the first ODI, India take the lead to 1-0. Here are a few notable stats for the first ODI between India and England at the MCA Stadium, Pune.
Shikhar Dhawan stranded in the nineties for the sixth time
After being dropped in the second T20I, Shikhar Dhawan was backed by the team management to open the innings in the first ODI. His returns were fruitful, but would have been displeased as he missed out on a century – his 18th in ODI – by 2 runs. In ODIs, this was the sixth time he was stranded in the nineties, five times dismissed and once not out. To enhance more, he has been dismissed four times to a score on which he was a stroke away from a century. Dhawan also became the fourth Indian batsmen to be dismissed on the exact score of 98, previous three were also openers.
Krunal Pandya smashes the fastest half-century for a debutant

In this series three Mumbai Indians player made their debuts, two in T20Is and one in the ODI, each and every one had a dazzling first innings. Ishan Kishan in the second T20I smashed a sensational half-century, Suryakumar Yadav impressed one and all with a 57 in his first innings and today, Krunal Pandya was over the moon. He registered a fifty in 26 balls, which is the fastest for a debutant in ODIs. To emboss more, he ended his innings at a strike rate of 187.1, which is the highest for a batsman who has scored a 50-plus score on his debut.
Krunal Pandya becomes the third Indian to a debut 50+ batting seven or lower

On debut, coming into bat at a pressure situation, Krunal showed he had nerves of steel. India were five down for the score of 205 in the 41st over of the innings. Krunal started off with three boundaries against Sam Curran. There on, he was unstoppable and went on to register a half-century on his debut batting at number seven. He became only the third Indian to register a half-century in his debut match innings.
Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow at the top

Since the time Jonny Bairstow started to open in 2017, he has been on excellent terms with Jason Roy. The pair have batted together for less than 50 innings and they are already one of the best batting duos of England. With 2,626 runs together, they are behind Eoin Morgan and Joe Root (3,181) in the all-time list. One reason behind them catching up so quick is their consistency. They have had 22 partnerships of over 50 in the 46 innings, out of which 12 have been 100-plus. The 12 century partnerships by these two is the joint most for pair from England in ODIs.
Multiple openers getting out in the 90s
There were two batsmen in this match who would rue falling short of a well-deserved hundred. Dhawan in the first innings fell 2 short of the milestone and Bairstow in the second innings was caught 6 runs short. This was only the second instance in an ODI match where multiple openers were dismissed in the nineties. On both the occasions, Indian openers were involved. The other instance came in the match between India and Australia in Mohali in 2019. Rohit Sharma (95) and Usman Khawaja (91) were the openers to suffer this fate then.
Prasidh Krishna delivers the best spell on debut for India

On back of some sensational performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021, Prasidh Krishna received his maiden ODI call. It didn’t take too much time for him to take the center stage as he debuted in the first ODI itself. Though the start to his career wasn’t a great one, he came back strongly in his second and third spell. With the wicket of Roy and more importantly, breaking the first wicket partnership, he had his maiden wicket. A wicket-less first spell of three overs was followed by a two wicket second spell and one wicket third spell. On the first ball of his fourth, he became the first Indian bowler to bag a four-wicket haul on his debut. Hence, registering the best spell.
