Chennai Super Kings’ INR 2.4 crore signing Sam Curran shone bright in the opening night of The Hundred 2025, in Oval Invincibles' clash against London Spirit, on August 5 (Tuesday). After winning the toss, Kane Williamson’s London Spirit side decided to bat first in the tournament’s opening game.
However, that decision backfired horribly, as they were reduced to 21/2 in the powerplay, with Keaton Jennings and Kane Williamson walking back to the hut early. While Ashton Turner did show his batting prowess, with a 14-ball 21, his wicket triggered a lower-order collapse.
It was triggered by the CSK all-rounder Curran, who picked up a wicket with a ‘moon ball’. Curran then removed Wood before castling Richard Gleeson with another moon ball to bowl the Spirit out for 80.
Will Jacks and Tawanda Muyeye gave the Invincibles a great start, with a 34-run opening stand in 32 balls. It seemed like the Spirit had an opportunity to make a comeback, with Invincibles on 51/2. However, all of those hopes ended when Curran smacked a nine-ball 14, including three boundaries, to help the Invincibles to a rather comfortable victory in their first clash.
Curran had a middling IPL 2025 season, scoring 114 runs at an average of 22.80 and picking up just one solitary wicket. But performances like this will go a long way in the all-rounder making a case for his retention ahead of IPL 2026.
