61*, 116*, 123, 6 & 120*, AB de Villiers turned the clock back in the recently concluded World Championship of Legends (WCL). The South African batter finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer, smashing 429 runs in the competition, averaging a staggering 143.00, with three fifties and one hundred.
On August 2 (Saturday), de Villiers probably had the toughest of challenges in the competition, as South African legends were tasked to chase down 196 in the final against Pakistan Champions. The pressure brought out the best in the 41-year-old, who took the Pakistan bowling unit down in sizzling fashion, smashing 120 off 60 balls.
In the aftermath of his swashbuckling display in the final, de Villiers’ former teammate Dale Steyn reckoned that a retired version of the 41-year-old is much better than half of the IPL internationals.
“Unpopular/Popular opinion. Ab is still better than half the internationals at IPL. Maybe even more,” Steyn posted on X.
Since his retirement, de Villiers has rarely been part of any tournament, except for WCL.
