Only a few months ago, Sunil Gavaskar was quite displeased with Rishabh Pant over his shot selection during India’s loss against Australia in Melbourne, calling it ‘Stupid, Stupid, Stupid’. However, the same commentator now has turned a corner in his comments against Pant, calling him an ‘intelligent cricketer’.
Gavaskar’s words come on the back of Pant’s terrible debut outing for Lucknow Super Giants, where he recorded a six-ball duck and made a few tactical errors and blunders on the field. The 75-year-old also went on to add that it is just the first match of IPL 2025, and Pant will definitely learn from that.
“I think he knows. He actually mentioned in the post-match interview that you often learn more from your mistakes than from your successes. When you bat well, there’s not much to reflect upon, but when you don’t perform with the bat or ball, you understand the areas that need improvement. This is just the first match, and there are 13 more to go,” Gavaskar told the broadcasters.
Not just that, the former Indian skipper also hailed Pant, calling him an ‘intelligent cricketer’, stating that he will pick up valuable insights - both batting and captaincy - as the season progresses.
"Rishabh Pant is an intelligent cricketer, and he will have picked up valuable insights regarding his batting and captaincy. I believe we will see an improved performance from him,” he further added.
“Additionally, when a captain scores runs or takes wickets, it significantly boosts their confidence in making bowling changes and setting the field. Once he gets some runs under his belt, I expect his captaincy to become even more assured,” said Gavaskar.
LSG next play Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 27 (Thursday) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.
