Playing for India B in the Duleep Trophy 2024, Rishabh Pant smashed the fastest fifty of the competition, reaching the milestone in just 34 balls on Saturday (September 7) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Coming to bat at number five, after the fall of the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Musheer Khan and Abhimanyu Easwaran in quick succession, Pant got together with Sarfaraz Khan and put on 72 off just 55 balls for the fourth wicket against India A. Initially, Pant started quickly, getting to 23 off just 15 balls.
However, as Sarfaraz got going, he slowed down to get 30 off 25 balls. But once Sarfaraz was out before reaching his fifty, Pant went in top gear, smashing the next 20 runs off just nine balls. He moved to 49 with a six off Kuldeep Yadav.
This is Pant’s second fastest fifty in first-class cricket, with the fastest one coming against Sri Lanka at this very ground of Bengaluru in just 28 balls in 2022.
After a rare failure in the first innings, where he could score just six off nine balls, the 26-year-old came all guns blazing in the second against India A, scoring 61 off just 47 balls. Pant will most likely be making his red-ball comeback for India with the Bangladesh series starting September 19.
