Rishad Hossain Creates History As Bangladesh Decimate West Indies To Win Series

Rishad is joint-second when it comes to most wickets in a three-match ODI series

Bangladesh’s Rishad Hossain created history when he picked up three wickets in the third and final ODI of the three-match series against West Indies and guided his team to a 2-1 series win over the visitors.

With his three wickets on October 23 (Thursday) at the Sher-E-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, Rishad’s tally in the series reached 12 wickets, which is the second-highest by a bowler in a three-match series, only behind his compatriot, Mustafizur Rahman, who had taken 13 wickets in a three-match series in 2014-15 against India.

Rishad is jointly second when it comes to most wickets in a three-match ODI series, alongside former Bangladesh captain Masrafe Mortaza (12 wickets against Kenya in 2007) and former West Indies pacer Vasbert Drakes, who incidentally picked 12 wickets in a series against Bangladesh in 2002-03. That series was also played in Bangladesh.

Along with 12 wickets, Rishad made important contributions with the bat, scoring 26 and 39* in the first two matches, striking at more than 100 on both those occasions.

In the final match of the series, Bangladesh, on the back of Soumya Sarkar’s 91 and Saif Hassan’s 80, made 296/8 in their 50 overs. However, West Indies provided no challenge like they did in the second ODI and got bowled out for 117, losing the match by 179 runs.

179 runs was the second-biggest winning margin by runs for Bangladesh in ODIs, only behind their 183-run win against Ireland in Sylhet in 2023. Incidentally, this 179-run loss was West Indies’ biggest loss by runs against Bangladesh and the eighth-biggest overall in their ODI history.

Rishad, for his brilliant showing with both ball and bat, was rightly named Player of the Series.
