Riyan Parag refused to leave the field after being dismissed against the Gujarat Titans in the seventh over by left-arm pacer Kulwant Khejroliya on April 9 (Tuesday) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Parag nicked the ball to the keeper and while his bat was hitting the ground, the ball was close to the edge of his bat at the same time, and the third umpire decided to give it out without multiple checks.
It was the fourth ball of the seventh over, and Khejroliya bowled it really full, with the ball going across the right-hander from over the wicket. Parag tried to open the face of his bat, drive it through, but the ball shaped away as it passed the bat. Keeper Jos Buttler and the close-in fielders appealed for the catch and the on-field umpire raised his finger.
Parag reviewed the call, and the replay showed a spike as the ball passed close to the bat. The TV umpire didn’t check multiple replays to confirm the source of the spike, as it could also have been due to Parag’s bat being close to the ground. He gave it out after seeing the spike on the Snickometer.
The young batter from Assam wasn’t happy with the decision and stood his ground, trying to discuss the issue with the on-field umpires. However, they asked him to keep going to the pavilion, which he reluctantly agreed to.
RR were reduced to 60/3 in 6.4 overs after his wicket.
