Former Australia wicketkeeper who suffered a massive heart attack earlier this week continues to be in a critical condition after being placed in an induced coma, according to a statement from his son Paul.
Marsh suffered a heart attack when he was on his way to a charity event in Bundaberg on Thursday (February 24). His heartbeat stopped for several minutes but was retrieved by the doctors at Bundaberg Hospital.
“He (Rod) is currently in the fight of his life and remains in an induced coma in critical condition,” Marsh's son Paul said in a statement released on behalf of the family.
“At the moment this is a waiting game and we are unlikely to have any certainty for some time.
“We know there is a lot of interest in Dad’s condition and our family has been overwhelmed by the messages of love and support from all around the world. We have listened to and read every one of them and we are incredibly grateful to everyone.
“Dad would not still be here without the bravery and quick thinking of Dave Hillier and John Glanville. We will be eternally grateful to both of them.”
Paul in his statement also thanked Jimmy Maher, Darren Lehmann, Ian Healy and Allan Border, along with the Australian Cricketers’ Association and the ICU team at Bundaberg hospital for their continued support.
“We will provide further updates once we have them and, in the meantime, we ask media to respect our family’s privacy as we focus on helping Dad fight this battle,” the statement concluded.
Marsh, a veteran of 96 Tests, also served as Australia's selector until 2016.
