Rohit Sharma can play till he is 50, says Yograj Singh

The India skipper will lead his side in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the US and West Indies, but what after that?

Rohit Sharma will lead India in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, starting June 1. In all likeliness, this could be the final time he will play in a World Cup for India. However, former India cricketer Yograj Singh believes that Rohit, 37, could go on to play till he is 50.

"This talk about age, that someone is these many years old… I have never understood it. What is wrong if you are fit at 40, 42 or even 45, and if you are performing? In our country, people believe that once you're 40, you're old, it's time to have kids, you're done. The truth is that you are not finished," Yograj Singh, who also happens to be former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh's father, told Sports18 in an interview.

"Mohinder Amarnath was 38 years old when he won India the World Cup (he was 33). He was the Player of the Match in the final. So, I feel that in Indian cricket, the age factor should be scrapped once and for all. Rohit Sharma and Viru [Virender Sehwag] are two such great players who have never thought about fitness and training. If he does, he can play till he is 50."

Rohit has played 11 white-ball World Cups to date but has been part of the winning side just once - in 2007 - when India won the T20 World Cup in South Africa.

He has come close a few times, including making the final in the 2023 World Cup at home last year, while he also made the semis in the 2015 and 2019 editions and 2016, where India crashed out in the semi-final in the T20 World Cup.

Rohit will be around 40 when the next T20 World Cup (after 2024) is played in India in 2026, and the following year ODI World Cup will be played across three countries in Africa.
