Less than a month after he became the oldest player to become the number one ranked batter in ODI cricket, Rohit Sharma’s reign has been cut-short as New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell has become the new number one ranked batter in 50-over cricket.
Mitchell’s elevation comes on the back of the 119 he scored in the first ODI against West Indies in Christchurch, which took his ODI average to an incredible 53.13. It’s not just this one knock, however, as the right-hander’s last few knocks in ODIs read 119, 44, 56* & 78*. Across his last 9 ODI innings, the 34-year-old is averaging 78.00, making him the most in-form batter in the world in the format.
Mitchell only has a one-point lead over Rohit, though, and the team India skipper will have the chance to regain top spot in the three-match ODI series against South Africa starting November 30.
Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran is the third-ranked batter while Shubman Gill (4th), Virat Kohli (5th) and Shreyas Iyer (8th) are the other Indians in the top ten. Interestingly, the ‘un-retired’ Quinton de Kock is already moving towards the top ten and is now ranked 12th following an incredibly successful comeback series where he put up scores of 53, 123* & 63.
There are no changes to the top five in the ODI bowlers’ rankings, while the biggest mover on the bowling front is Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed, who has jumped 11 spots to move to 9th position. Kuldeep Yadav (6) is the only Indian in the top ten, while Rashid Khan is the top-ranked ODI bowler.
In terms of all-rounders, Axar Patel (9) is the only Indian in the top 10, while Azmatullah Omarzai is the top-ranked all-rounder.
