Rohit Sharma Did Not Clear Bronco Test, Neither Did Any Other India Player: Here's Why

While the Bronco test is new, even the Yo-Yo test was not a selection criterion post the 2019 World Cup

No, India ODI captain Rohit Sharma did not undergo the much-talked-about Bronco fitness test. Not only Rohit, but almost nobody went through the test because, apparently, the new Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coach of the Indian men’s cricket team was not present at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE).

Many Indian players, including Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, went through the regular health checkups, basic agility test and the old Yo-Yo test as part of their fitness routine before joining the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2025 (except Rohit, who retired from T20Is).

Quoting a source ‘well-placed’ with the BCCI’s CoE, The Times of India (TOI) wrote that the Bronco test did not happen at the facility and, if at all needed, will happen when the Asia Cup team lands in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on September 5.

"It could happen when the squad assembles in Dubai for the Asia Cup. The team will have their first session at ICC Academy on September 5. So, if the management and the S&C want to do a Bronco assessment, it could happen in Dubai. If at all it happens,” the source said.

While the Bronco test is new, even the Yo-Yo test was not a selection criterion post the 2019 World Cup, when it was one of the criteria for selection in a team headed by Virat Kohli as India captain and Ravi Shastri as head coach.

"During Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri’s time, they directed Shankar Basu to get fitness to a level leading into the 2019 World Cup. Those numbers were agreed upon and shared, and it became a selection criterion,” Soham Desai, India’s former S&C coach, was quoted as saying by TOI.

“But after that, we did the Yo-Yo test three times a year for almost all contracted players every year. But it was never a selection criterion,” Soham clarified further.

While Rohit will most likely train on his own, as there is more than a month to go for the Australia tour, where he will finally be in action alongside Kohli, other members, who were at CoE, have already joined India’s squad for Asia Cup 2025.
