Rohit Sharma did announce his retirement from Test cricket, but not before the news of selection committee looking to replace him as a captain had already been published. In a shocking move, the senior selection committee of the Indian men’s team decided to remove Rohit Sharma as the captain of the national Test team, starting with the tour of England, at the end of IPL 2025.
The news, doing the rounds in the media circles for quite some time, finally got confirmed by a source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
“The selectors’ thought process is clear. They want a new leader for the England tour, and Rohit doesn’t fit in as a captain, especially considering his red-ball form. They want to groom a young leader for the next Test cycle, and the selection committee has informed the BCCI that Rohit won’t lead the team,” Indian Express quoted a source in the BCCI as saying.
With his average in the last two series (against Australia and New Zealand) being 6.20 and 15.16 respectively, it was hard to pick him in the playing 11 straightaway, and, therefore, him being the captain would have only complicated things.
Overall, Rohit has an average of 40.57 in his 67-Test career, but it drops to 31 outside India. In England, though, he had performed better, but his average was only 44.66. So if India wanted to take him on the tour, they could have, as a specialist batter.
