Rahul Dravid Hails This Side of Rohit Sharma's Captaincy As Game-Changer
Rahul Dravid hailed Rohit Sharma’s time as India’s captain
Rohit Sharma is known to be a leader, and his time as India’s captain across formats certainly suggested progress in that direction. Under Rohit’s leadership, India broke their decade-long jinx, besting South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final and also lifted the Champions Trophy in 2025.
Rahul Dravid, India’s coach during the T20 World Cup victory, opened up on Rohit’s captaincy style, adding that he was quite clear about what he wanted from the team. Not just that, Dravid revealed that Rohit deeply ‘cared’ about the team.
“It was really good. Firstly, the thing with Rohit that I always felt was that he deeply cared about the team, and he was very clear about it. Right from the first day, he was very clear about how he wanted to run the team and what was important to him,” Dravid told Ashwin in his YouTube video.
“And that’s really important in any relationship between a captain and a coach, especially the way I coach. I always like to believe that it should be the captain’s team. I’ve been a player, and I’ve been a captain as well, but a captain has to lead in terms of the direction he wants to go in, and you have to support him and help him in that,” he said.
The former Indian skipper also hailed Rohit’s ability as a leader, stating that he knew what the team atmosphere should look like and worked towards that. It reflected on the pitch as India had a good time under Rohit’s leadership in the 2023 ODI World Cup before suffering a defeat in the final against Australia.
“Of course, you sometimes need to help a captain in terms of getting that clarity and understanding what is required. But with Rohit, I thought he was very clear about what he wanted from the team—how he wanted the environment to be, how he wanted the atmosphere to be, and how he wanted things to run. He had so much experience over the years, and that really helped. He was very clear on those things.”
While Rohit has retired from both T20Is and Tests, he is still India's captain and an active part of the ODI setup, as the Men in Blue look to bring home the 2027 ODI World Cup.
