Joe Root ended Day 1 of the third England-India Test at Lord’s on 99*. On the morning of Day 2, he didn’t waste any time in reaching the milestone and getting the pressure off his shoulders.
Albeit it was an edge to the third man region for a four, it would have brought Root’s heart in his mouth as he exulted and jumped hard to celebrate his 11th and overall 37th century. It was also his third consecutive Test century at the venue. Moreover, he also overtook Graham Gooch as the highest run-scorer at Lord's in international cricket.
Yesterday, he put up the hard work against India’s disciplined bowling as run scoring dropped to a trickle; however, he persevered hard to survive the day as India tried all the tricks in the book to break his concentration.
With this, he equalled the record of Steve Smith for most Test centuries against India in Test cricket (11), and scored his eighth century at Lord’s - the most for any batter. He also scored his 22nd century in England, and is now just one century behind the likes of Mahela Jayawardene, Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara in terms of most centuries scored at home in Test cricket.
Although he was cleaned up by his nemesis Bumrah soon after completing his century, he did his job on a pitch that wasn’t easy to score on.
