5 factors that helped RR cruise past MI in Jaipur

Returning to the side after an injury layoff, Sandeep Sharma bagged the first five-for of his IPL career

Boult, Sandeep give Mumbai the Deja vu feeling

The last time these two teams met, in Match 14, Trent Boult and Nandre Burger shared four wickets between them in the powerplay and Mumbai never recovered. It was quite similar in this reverse fixture. Trent Boult again got Rohit Sharma out on the fifth ball of the match. Sandeep Sharma, taking the new ball for the first time, did Burger’s role, picking two wickets. Mumbai were 45/3 in the powerplay.

With Rohit’s wicket, Boult now has the most wickets in the first over in IPL history.

Tilak, Nehal carry Mumbai's batting

Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera: 114 runs from 69 deliveries

The rest of the MI batters: 55 runs from 51 deliveries

MI were reeling when Yuzvendra Chahal removed Mohammad Nabi for his 200th IPL wicket. From 52/4, Tilak and Wadhera added 99 runs from only 52 deliveries to storm Mumbai back into the game. Tilak scored 65 off 45 balls. In his first start of the season, Wadhera contributed 49 from only 24 balls, striking sixes against Chahal and Avesh Khan.

Thanks to their efforts, with five overs left in the innings, Mumbai were 125/4 and had the launchpad for a big finish with Hardik Pandya and Tim David to come.

Sandeep, Boult halt MI again

However, Boult returned for his last over and broke the partnership with the wicket of Wadhera. Sandeep took care of the rest. In his last over, Sandeep dismissed Tilak, David and Gerald Coetzee. He snaffled three wickets for three runs. Mumbai only managed 48 runs in the last five overs despite their deep batting lineup. Sandeep picked up his first five-wicket haul in IPL (5/18).

Mumbai’s bowling plans

Defending only 180 against the table-toppers, Mumbai didn’t start with their best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. Instead, they allowed RR an easy start, with Hardik Pandya bowling the opening over. He went for two boundaries.

Moreover, Mumbai continued with their trend of making bowling changes throughout the powerplay. Coetzee troubled Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first over but wasn’t brought back in the attack until the 16th over.

Jaiswal had his highest false shot percentage in the game against Coetzee (33.3%) but MI didn’t target the left-hander enough. It is important because…

Jaiswal leaves bad form behind

…Jaiswal recovered from his poor start to the season and how. He notched up his second IPL hundred, carrying the bat through in the successful chase. The left-hander had only 121 runs in the season thus far at an average of 17.3. He almost doubled that tally with his unbeaten 104 off 60 balls.

Both his hundreds in IPL have come against Mumbai.
