Ryan Rickelton Breaks AB de Villiers’ Record On Champions Trophy Debut
Rickelton is the first ever South African wicketkeeper to smash a ton in the Champions Trophy
South Africa might no longer have the services of Quinton de Kock in ODI cricket, but it’s not taken long for his replacement, Ryan Rickelton, to leave a mark.
The 28-year-old, who recently posted a mammoth 259 in a Test match against Pakistan, made his ICC Champions Trophy debut today against Afghanistan and made an instant impact. Rickelton opened the batting and blasted a century to floor Afghanistan in the Proteas’ first game of the tournament.
In the process, Rickelton broke a record that was set by AB de Villiers in 2013.
Prior to today, de Villiers’ 70 against India in Cardiff in 2013 was the highest individual score posted by a South African wicketkeeper in the Champions Trophy. But on the back of his sizzling knock today, that record belongs to Rickelton.
Highest score by a South African wicketkeeper in Champions Trophy
103 - Ryan Rickelton vs AFG in Karachi, 2025
70 - AB de Villiers vs IND in Cardiff, 2013
69 - March Boucher vs PAK in Mohali, 2006
It also means that Rickelton is the first ever South African wicketkeeper to smash a ton in the Champions Trophy. Overall, he is the fifth South African to smash a century in the Champions Trophy.
