SA20 2025: Dunith Wellalage replaces Bethell as Paarl Royals' wildcard signing

SA20 franchise Paarl Royals named Dunith Wellalage as Jacob Bethell’s replacement for the upcoming season on December 10. Bethell, who is now part of England’s setup across formats, won’t be available because of national team commitments.

The left-arm spin bowling all-rounder from Sri Lanka was previously also part of the Barbados Royals setup and is an impressive all-rounder. Across 53 T20s, the 21-year-old Sri Lankan has scalped 53 wickets, averaging 19.96. 

“Dunith is a phenomenal addition to our squad,” said Paarl Royals coach Trevor Penney, “He has shown immense potential and composure in high-pressure games, both for Sri Lanka and during his time with the Barbados Royals.

Not just that, the islander is also more than a capable batter, as evidenced by his first-class numbers (866 runs @27.06). 

“His ability to influence games with both bat and ball gives us fantastic balance, and we’re thrilled to have him join us for this campaign.

“On the other hand, Jacob Bethell’s rapid rise has been a joy to witness, and we are proud of his achievements with England. We wish him all the success in his international journey.”
