Sachin Tendulkar As Next BCCI President? ‘No’ Say His Team As They Rubbish Rumours
The denial comes just weeks before the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 28
The legendary Sachin Tendulkar has firmly denied being in contention for the presidency of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), putting to rest widespread speculation linking him to the top post.
In a strongly worded clarification issued on Thursday, his management company, SRT Sports Management Pvt Ltd, said:
"It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). We wish to categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations."
The denial comes just weeks before the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 28, where elections will be held for several key posts, including president, vice-president, secretary, joint secretary, treasurer, and Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman.
The position of President has drawn the most attention following the exit of Roger Binny, who stepped down earlier this month after turning 70, the age cap for administrators. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal could also be required to step aside, with a mandatory cooling-off period kicking in after six years in administration.
Barring those two roles, most other office-bearers are expected to continue. Secretary Devajit Saikia is widely tipped to stay on, having earlier replaced Jay Shah after Shah became ICC chairman. Joint secretary Rohan Gauns Dessai and treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhati are also likely to retain their posts.
Friday, September 12, is the last date for state associations to submit their representatives for the AGM, a process that may reveal more about the eventual candidates for the top positions.
