Sajid Khan spins Pakistan to memorable victory in second Test

The spinner picked up 12 wickets in the match to propel his side to an impressive win

Off-spinner Sajid Khan turned match-winner as his 12-wicket haul helped Pakistan beat Bangladesh by an innings and eight runs in the second Test in Dhaka. With the win, Pakistan swept the series 2-0 and kept their second place in the World Test Championship (WTC) table on 36 points.

Bangladesh resumed day 5 at 76 for 7 but added just 11 more runs to their overnight total. As a result, Pakistan had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on. Sajid finished with figures of 8 for 42, which are the best-ever bowling figures against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh lost four wickets in nine overs before Liton Das (45) and Mushfiqur Rahim (48) put up a 73-run stand for the fifth wicket to instill some stability in the innings.

They absorbed the pressure initially and for the first time in the match, Pakistan found it difficult to make a breakthrough.

Shakib Al Hasan (68) then put on 49 with Mushfiqur and then 51 with Mehidy Hasan (14), which gave Bangladesh belief that they could save the Test. However, once skipper Babar Azam dismissed Mehidy - his first Test wicket - and then Sajid got the better of Shakib.

Amid the dimming lights, the umpires had instructed Pakistan to operate only with spinners which they duly obliged. Sajid completed the formalities when he got rid of the last two batters, finishing the match with figures of 12 for 128.

In a match where over two days was washed out due to rain, Pakistan registered 300 for 4 thanks to fifties from Babar Azam (76), Azhar Ali (56), Mohammad Rizwan (53*) and Fawad Alam (50*). That proved to be more than enough as they managed to bundle Bangladesh out twice in about five sessions or so.

Pakistan started the series off with a comprehensive eight-wicket victory in Chattogram.

Brief scores:

Pakistan 300 for 4 decl (Babar Azam 76, Azhar Ali 56; Taijul Islam 2 for 73) beat Bangladesh 87 (Shakib Al Hasan 33, Najmul Hossain Shanto 30; Sajid Khan 8 for 42) & 205 (Shakib Al Hasan 68, Mushfiqur Rahim 48; Sajid Khan 4 for 86) by an innings and 8 runs.
