Samson ruled out of Sri Lanka series; Jitesh Sharma gets a call-up

Sanju Samson hurt his left knee while attempting to field a ball near the boundary ropes during the first T20I

Sanju Samson has been ruled out of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka due to a niggle on his knee, the BCCI announced on Wednesday. Vidarbha and Punjab Kings wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma has been called up to the Indian set-up for the first time in his career.

"Samson hurt his left knee while attempting to field a ball near the boundary ropes during the first T20I. He was taken for scans and a specialist opinion this afternoon in Mumbai by the BCCI Medical Team and has been advised rest and rehabilitation," a BCCI release stated.

Jitesh has now been added to the set-up as a cover for Ishan Kishan. In IPL 2022, he smashed 234 runs in 12 games at a strike rate of 163.63. Even in the 2022 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he smoked 224 runs in 10 games at a strike rate of 175.00.

Arshdeep Singh, who missed the first T20I, is now available for the second encounter. In his absence, India handed over a debut to Shivam Mavi and the young paceman went on to claim four wickets.

Now that Arshdeep is fit, Harshal Patel is probably going to be the one who will be left out. The right-arm seamer leaked 41 runs in four overs and hasn’t really been in great form of late. In his last 12 T20I innings, Harshal has an economy of 10.2 and a strike rate of 23.2.
